FIFA Sponsors Are Reluctant to Push Reforms-2014

Sponsors were unusually vocal after the latest accusations of corruption at FIFA, the organizer of the World Cup, surfaced just before the soccer tournament began in June.

Sony, the electronics and entertainment giant, called for an investigation of possible irregularities in choosing a site for the 2022 World Cup. Adidas, the German sportswear manufacturer, warned that “the negative tenor of the public debate around FIFA at the moment is neither good for football nor for FIFA and its partners.” Their sentiments were echoed by others, including Coca-Cola, Visa, Hyundai and Budweiser.

But now that the matches in Brazil are over, it is unlikely that sponsors will pound their fists and demand reforms.

FIFA’s corporate partners have a long history of enduring serial FIFA controversies in silence, and that is unlikely to change. There is just too much money at stake.

2014-Liverpool Will Let Luis Suárez Go to Barcelona

Luis Suárez, who was suspended from all soccer activities for four months after biting an opposing player during the World Cup, will return from his ban with a new club: Barcelona.

It may not be the best example for young and impressionable players looking up to Suárez, the Uruguayan star, but part of the fallout from Suárez’s infamous nibble of the Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder was increased pressure on Liverpool, his former club in England’s Premier League, to grant him the transfer he had requested.

Liverpool had previously rejected opportunities to part with Suárez, but after this latest case — the third biting episode of Suárez’s career — Liverpool engaged Barcelona in negotiations. The teams settled on a transfer fee reported to be £75 million (about $128 million), and Suárez agreed to a five-year contract with the Catalan club.
“It is with a heavy heart that I leave Liverpool for a new life and new challenges in Spain,” Suárez said in a statement. “Both me and my family have fallen in love with this club and with the city.”

In his statement, and later in a letter posted on his official Twitter account, Suárez directly addressed the Liverpool fans, many of whom supported him through a tenure with the club that included controversy and success.

“I hope you can all understand why I have made this decision,” he said. “This club did all they could to get me to stay, but playing and living in Spain, where my wife’s family live, is a lifelong dream and ambition. I believe now the timing is right.”

FIFA announced this week that Suárez’s appeal of his punishment, which also includes a ban of nine international matches, was denied, meaning he will be ineligible to participate in practices or games with Barcelona until the end of October.

Despite the Loss of a Star, Liverpool Is Hoping to Build on Its Success

At nearly every stop during Liverpool’s preseason tour in the United States, Manager Brendan Rodgers has been asked how he planned to replace the star forward Luis Suárez, who was sent to Barcelona for $130 million shortly after the World Cup.
Rodgers understands why the questions are being asked and even shares in the worry about replacing Suárez. But at a news conference Tuesday in Manhattan, held before Liverpool’s win over Manchester City on penalty kicks at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, he said: “I’m certainly not crying. We’re looking forward to the start of the season. I’m very hopeful we can have a similar, if not a more successful, season.”
A more successful season without Suárez would certainly be quite an accomplishment for the Reds, who finished a surprising second in England’s Premier League last season and earned a place in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2010.

Suárez’s Premier League-leading 30 goals earned him player of the year honors from the English Football Writers’ Association and the Professional Footballers’ Association. The statistical website WhoScored.com gave Suárez an 8.43 rating for the season, which ranked him far ahead of his closest rivals — Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard (7.74) and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey (7.72). Suárez also finished with 12 assists, second only to Gerrard’s 13

The worest football kits all the time.

Going to a posh dinner? Wear a football shirt
Spanish second division side Cultural Leonesa should definitely be your new favourite football team. Why? Well the club have just launched definitely the best football kit ever, with their tuxedo style shirt set to be worn in official matches next season. It really is completely mad, but we absolutely love it.Going to a posh dinner? Wear a football shirt
Are you thirsty yet?
Spanish side Deportivo Lugo have unveiled two shirts inspired by the region’s favourite cuisine and liquid – octopus and beer. Only it all seems pretty cynical and outrageous given that the club’s sponsors are well-known Spanish beer brand Estrella Galicia. Is this just sports advertising and marketing gone completely mad?
Are you thirsty yet?
This is just disgusting, frankly
Ahhhh, no!! The close up of the octopus shirt is just horrendous. Seriously horrendous.
This is just disgusting, frankly
No way!
Top players have the eye of the tiger - so why not wear the shirt of a lion? This was one of Adidas's spoof suggestions to Ajax players.
No way!

Donovan leads Galaxy to 3-0 win over Sounders

SEATTLE (AP) — Landon Donovan scored one goal and set up the other two as Los Angeles won 3-0 at MLS Eastern Conference leader Seattle on Monday.
Donovan set up Gyasi Zardes' eighth-minute opener, then scored off a rebound 10 minutes later.
The former U.S. international, who was contentiously overlooked for the World Cup, also played a role in Stefan Ishizaki's goal in the 36th minute.
The three early goals threatened to produce a worst-ever home defeat for the Sounders, but they managed to avoid matching the record home loss of 4-0, also against the Galaxy, in 2010.

Cheeky Prince Harry's thumbs up behind New Zealand rugby coach as he follows Queen's lead at Common-selfie Games

Harry photobombThis is the moment loveable rogue Prince Harry photobombed New Zealand Commonwealth Games officials in Glasgow - and they were so chuffed one of them made it their profile picture on Facebook. The Prince gave a cheeky thumbs up in the background of a selfie taken by New Zealand rugby sevens coach Sir Gordon Tietjens, Sport Manawatu chief executive Trevor Shailer and Massey University Professor Emeritus Gary Hermansson (left to right). The three men in the their black and white New Zealand team kits leaned in with their arms around each other as the royal popped up in the background in a white shirt. It comes after the Queen herself launched a royal photobomb on Australia's Hockeyroos (top right) at the Games last week.
